INTERNATIONAL SATURDAY SCHOOL

10am - 4pm

At International School Hamamatsu UCAN2, our Saturday program is designed to emulate a school day in America or Australia or any English-speaking school. It is immersion in English. Our program is an IMMERSION program. In Japan where English is not the main language in which classes are taught at school, it makes it very difficult for those who have been overseas to keep the English level they have attained. We aim to not only allow them to keep the level they have achieved, but to improve on it in the most natural way possible. That is to teach to their level in English using great resources and great teachers.  We have five levels of classes.

Our youngest class is designed for very young learners, from 3 years old to about 7. Some of the students have been overseas or learned English from an International kindergarten elsewhere or have had some experience through English learning.  It focuses on whole language learning while giving emphasis to the sounds of language using phonics teaching. Interesting passages, songs, games and activities help our students learn about the world in English. All subjects are taught, English, drama, math, science, social studies and more.

Our two intermediate classes are for those who are young and have spent time overseas or for those who have never been overseas but have studied English for a few years and are at an Eiken level of 4 or above.

We have two Advanced level classes, one for those who are still in upper elementary school or early junior high school and the other for those at upper junior high and above. Many of our students in these classes have attained Eiken level 2, Pre 1 and 1. We cater to their level.

From 2020, we have incorporated the fantastic all-encompassing National Geographic texts, Reach Higher and Reach for the Stars. Each class has their level and appropriate content fit just for them. All these texts have an ONLINE component which allows students to listen and practice at home during the week. It also allows the teachers to see how they are progressing.

Facebook Page for Parents to View Kids

We have a private Facebook page only by invitation where videos of presentations and other class activities are uploaded for parents to see their children in action, almost in real time! These are uploaded almost each week.

Communicating With Parents and Students

Each student has a Zoom Chat group with teachers as well as the whole class. Each week the homework is uploaded on to the chat group, so students and parents know what to do.

Students also upload and send a photo of their diary or other written homework, privately to the teacher for correction.

Once a month, there is an oral reading test which students upload audio recordings of.

There is always a good flow of communication between students and teachers.

Critical Thinking

Our curriculum encourages students to think for themselves, but with particular emphasis on asking questions, forming hypotheses and researching and trying to find their own answers.

The next block of photos depicts our students deep in such a conundrum and trying yo use their critical thinking skills as well as excellent teamwork to find the solution to a conservation math problem posed to them. One of the teams did succeed in finding the correct answer and it was not by chance, but by mathematical calculation once they figured out how!

Oral Presentations

Oral presentations are encouraged each week from all class levels.
Such practice gives children the skills to develop confidence in both speaking in front of others as well as in the English language itself.

Show & Tell

At the beginning of each Saturday lesson, students have the opportunity to show and explain something they treasure or are interested in at the time. It’s a very popular time of the lesson!

Zoom lessons during Coronavirus lockdown

Our students were not only enthusiastic participants in 6 hour Zoom lesson weeks, but came out with even more confidence than before!
